On January 31, the PESA Emerging Leaders Committee hosted its bimonthly leadership forum with PESA Advisory Board Member Michelle Lewis, Chief Strategy Officer, SVP, Corporate Development & Investor Relations, DistributionNOW.
In this forum, Lewis shared her thoughts on leadership development throughout the course of her career. “Being a leader is not about having all of the answers; it’s about asking the right questions,” she said.
Lewis provided inspiration on how to navigate through market cycles from a personal perspective.
“Ask yourself the following questions: What is your why? Why are you motivated? Why do you push forward? Why do you persevere?” Lewis asked. “Having answers to these questions will provide important insight into yourselves. It will give you the tools you need to evolve and change.”
Lewis also discussed the importance of making mistakes, then learning from them.
“I don’t want to stop failing because that means I’ve stopped learning.”
When downsizing occurs in the industry, attitude and behaviors change under duress. The process is difficult for everyone, so recognizing a co-worker’s deepest needs is important. Lewis said she hopes that everyone can find a place to love where they work, love who they work with, and know someone appreciates you. She said that she tries to make others feel appreciated, and when asked if she could put her thoughts on leadership on a bumper sticker, she said, “Be Kind.”
“Hearing Michelle speak was a good reminder that it is okay to be bold and take risks, especially early on in my career. As a young woman in the Oil & Gas industry, I look up to Michelle in all that she is doing to stand up for her beliefs, make a difference, be honest, and be kind. During this session, I was reminded of the importance of developing close relationships with those at work, as they impact me down the road," said a leadership forum participant.
