Members Discuss Career Development in Networking Event

PESA’s Emerging Executives Committee hosted the final quarterly networking session of 2020 for participants in the Executive Leadership Program. The session brought together the entire cohort, including those from Advanced Business Development, Engaging Leadership, Permian Engaging Leadership and the Strategic & Branded Executive.

PESA Emerging Executives Chair Omeid Rahimian, Oceaneering; Vice Chair Chris Berrie, Global Industry Manager – Well Service Pumps, Caterpillar; and PESA Vice President Strategy & Programs Molly Determan led the session, which took participants through discussion of topics distributed in advance.

Developed by the Emerging Executives Committee, the format was designed to help attendees identify career development and leadership behaviors that work for them, and brainstorm ways to continue development post-graduation including opportunities to develop others. The questions also provide PESA with feedback to continue to tailor programming for future cohorts.

The questions for discussion included continuing career development, takeaways from the program, developing others in their organizations, and what future leaders of the industry will look like.

As in past events, attendees were divided into small groups to allow everyone to actively engage in the discussion. Each group had a moderator who shared key takeaways to the entire group at the end of the session.

Rahimian recommended the book “Extreme Ownership,” for those who want to learn more about accountability.

“The book says, when somebody on your team fails, it’s also your failure,” Rahimian said. “The point is owning that failure, so it’s not placed upon an individual employee or your team. You take it personally and help them as if it’s one of your own personal failures.”

Participants said they valued the program as an opportunity to gain tools they could use in their daily work, apply to their development and share with colleagues. They appreciated the ability to form relationships with peers in the industry, to learn how to coach others, and learning how to be coached. They emphasized that leaders are always on a continuous learning journey and said their group plans to continue relationships with accountability partners and mentors.

PESA is expanding the Executive Leadership Program to the Middle East and looks forward to continuing the exchange of ideas, best practices and perspectives both domestically and internationally. PESA will celebrate this year’s class of Executive Leadership Program participants with a graduation event in January 2021.
